Boys Like Girls

Wow...it's been a while! Since the last time I blogged, we have moved to a different house, celebrated Christmas and started a new decade! I have got to do a better job of this!

Well, today were the valentine's parties at Jenna and Carson's school. It was the usual get loaded with all things red food-coloring, swap cheesy valentine's and hope no little boy or girl gets the wrong idea from my valentines kind of day. A kind of day a nutrition-nut like me loathes.

So, rewind to last week when Carson, currently 6 years old announces in the car while in the drive thru at Starbucks that he has a girlfriend. I quickly remind him that he can have friends and friends that are girls, but no "girlfriends." He says okay, and that was it. Phew, crisis averted....so I thought.

This week at school I picked him up from his kindergarten class and I asked him the usual "Did you have a rockin' day?" He says yes, and then he says " I had a super-rockin' day!" I said, "Wow, what made it super-rockin'?" He said, "you know the girl that I have a crush on?....(I thought we had taken care of this issue???) I said, "Yes." "She told me that she likes me too!!" he said with all sorts of excitement...ugh.

So this week while we were doing valentines, Carson cuts out the photo of the "girlfriend" and tapes it onto her valentine and draws hearts all around her picture. It was a moment where a mother has conflicting feelings....you know where you think it's kinda cute, but it also foreshadows how you are gonna feel in like 10 or 11 years when he really does draw hearts around another girls' photo and it's for real. I get that he is only 6 and as Jeff would say...CHILL OUT. But I am a mom and it's a big deal to me. Well, when I got to his class today for his party, the "girlfriend" marches right over to me and proudly announces that Carson drew hearts on her valentine. Carson beamed with pride.....and then PUT HIS ARM AROUND HER---in like a "she's my buddy" sort of way. Okay, I get it...he can call her his "girlfriend", but I really know that she is just his girl...friend.

Quote of the day: Love doesn't make the world go round; love is what makes the ride worthwhile.
